Strong Showing for WTEN on Day 2 of ITA Regionals

Two doubles pairs, Ketels in singles, move on

STANFORD, Calif. — Gonzaga women's tennis turned in a solid day in the opening rounds of the ITA Northwest Regional on Friday in Stanford, Calif.

Gonzaga advanced two doubles teams and two singles players to the Round of 16 with one of those singles moving on to the quarterfinals. Round of 16 doubles matches and quarterfinal singles matches will start Sunday morning.

"It was another great day for the team in terms of competing," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "We are doing a fantastic job of moving from point to point. We are really happy with our doubles. Their chemistry has made the difference. It is so rewarding to see Kate [Ketels] competing at such a high level. She is the embodiment of a Zag.  She has battled for every point in her matches and her mindset has made the difference."

Senior Kate Ketels continued her great play, earning two more straight-set wins to advance to the quarterfinals. She defeated Savanna Ly-Nguyen of Washington State in the Round of 32 7-5, 6-2, and then took down seventh-seeded Vanessa Wong of Washington in the Round of 16 7-5, 6-3. She'll face top-seeded Michaela Gordon of Stanford on Sunday.

Freshman Cate Broerman earned a Round of 32 win over ninth-seeded Sarah Choy of Stanford before falling to fifth-seeded Valentina Ivanov in the Round of 16.

In doubles, two GU pairs advanced to the Round of 16 with Broerman and Taylor Gruber taking an 8-2 win over Pacific, and Vlada Medvedocova and Ketels grabbing an 8-2 win over Santa Clara.

Gonzaga continue play at the ITA Northwest Regionals on , beginning at 8 a.m. at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
