SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women's tennis team finished off the fall season in style as the Zags won seven of eight matches in singles and doubles on Sunday at the Gonzaga Invitational inside the Stevens Center.
"We are really happy with the progress we made over the fall, it was evident in our play this week," head coach DJ Gurule. "We are excited to push ourselves in the offseason and get ready for a demanding spring schedule."
Individually, freshman
Jenna Sloan earned the singles title with an 81.8 win-percentage, winning 36 of her 44 games played for the tournament, including a 6-1, 6-1 win in Sunday's final round.
Kate Ketels was next with a 76.6 win-percentage and
Taylor Gruber was fourth at 66.1 percent. In doubles, GU's
Kate Ketels and
Vlada Medvedcova finished second with a win-percentage of 64.9 percent.
In doubles against Portland, GU was able to take home the three-match sweep. The first win came on No. 3 with GU's freshman duo of Sloan and
Maria Frampton. Facing a 3-4 deficit, Sloan and Frampton won five straight games to finish out the match 8-4.
Ketels and
Vlada Medvedcova held the lead the whole way in an 8-4 win on No. 2, but GU's pair of Gruber and
Cate Broerman had to make a comeback on No. 1. Facing a 5-6 deficit, Gruber and Broerman finished off the GU sweep by winning three straight games to close out the 8-6 win.
In singles, Gonzaga was dominant as well with four victories in straight sets. Sloan rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win on No. 5, while Medvedcova dispatched her opponent 6-1, 6-2 on No. 3. Ketels finished shortly after with a 6-3, 6-1 win on No. 2, and Gruber battled through a 6-3, 7-5 win on No. 4.
The tournament also wraps up play for the fall season for the Zags. GU will be back on the court in the dual-match season in January.
