GU’s Sullivan led the way with three hits, two doubles
SURPRISE, Ariz. — Gonzaga baseball took an early lead in the top of the fourth, but New Mexico earned it right back in the fifth on the way to a 6-4 GU loss on Sunday in Surprise, Arizona.
Ryan Sullivan did the majority of the damage on offense for Gonzaga (0-3), going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Ernie Yake, Carson Breshears and Josh Bristyan each singled, but New Mexico's (2-1) bullpen pitched 5.2 shutout innings to keep the Zags off the board after the fourth.
"It wasn't our best effort tonight in all three phases, we need to regroup and have a quick memory going into tomorrow," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "There is no time to hang our heads, we need to be ready to give the Gophers our best punch."
On the mound, GU starter Mac Lardner was touched up for five runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings. The bullpen was solid in relief, giving up a combined one run on three hits in 3.0 innings from Nick Trogrlic-Iverson, Trent Schulte and Billy Dimlow.
GU scored first for the third straight game, getting an RBI ground out from Ernie Yake. After New Mexico took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the opening frame, GU tied it up with an RBI fielder's choice from Brett Harris.
The Zags then took a 4-2 lead after an RBI single from Josh Bristyan and an RBI groundout from Carson Breshears, but New Mexico scored three unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth to retake the lead.
Gonzaga threatened in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out, but a double play ball ended the inning with no damage done. Then in the eighth, the Zags had two on with one out, but a pair of flyouts ended that threat.
Gonzaga wraps up the Collegiate Baseball Classic on Monday with a rematch against Minnesota at 9 a.m. PT/10 a.m. MT in Surprise, Arizona. The Golden Gophers beat the Zags 8-5 on Friday to open the tournament. Live stats are available at GoZags.com.
