NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Gonzaga baseball scored two in the 13
th inning of a restarted game from Friday evening to beat CSUN 10-8 on Saturday morning.
Gonzaga and CSUN battled to the 12
th inning on Friday evening before darkness forced a suspension of the game, which restarted on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Pinch hitter
Jack Krauel singled to start the 13
th inning and later scored when
Austin Pinorini reached on an error.
Nick Nyquist then knocked home
Ryan Sullivan to give GU a 10-8 lead. RHP
Alek Jacob then closed the door in the 13
th after pitching the 12
th on the restart.
Gonzaga held leads of 6-4 in the ninth and 8-6 in the 11
th, but weren't able to hold on until the two-run lead in the 13
th.
Sullivan hit an 11th-inning, two-run blast to left to propel the Zags to an 8-6 lead, but the Matadors battled back for the second time with two runs. The Matadors erased an early five-run deficit and scored two in the ninth to force extras.
Gonzaga stormed out to a lead with three runs in the second inning and two more in the third inning for a 5-0 advantage. In the third, RBI singles from
Ernie Yake,
Guthrie Morrison and
Troy Johnston provided the first three runs. Another RBI single by Morrison and one by
Brett Harris pushed the lead to GU's biggest of the day.
The Matadors got themselves back in the game in the third with three runs off of Legumina, but the GU starter got out of the inning and through the sixth unscathed.
Saturday's original doubleheader will be just a single game with a Noon start, and Sunday will become a doubleheader. Live stats are available at GoZags.com.
