MBB Opens WCC Tournament with Pepperdine Monday

Gonzaga looks to extend nation’s longest win streak to 21 in semifinals

THE TIP-OFF:
- Gonzaga and Pepperdine meet for the 88th time on Monday in the 2019 West Coast Conference Tournament semifinals in Las Vegas, at 6 p.m. GU has a 56-31 advantage in the series, 40-2 under Mark Few.
- The Zags have won 36 straight versus the Waves, with the last Pepperdine victory in the series coming on Jan. 18, 2002, 88-79.
- Gonzaga has won four of the seven all-time meetings in the WCC Tournament, including the latest in the 2015 semifinals, 79-61.
- Gonzaga completed an undefeated conference season with a 69-55 win at Saint Mary's on March 2. Josh Perkins led the Zags with 19 points.
- The Bulldogs have won seven straight West Coast Conference regular season titles, and six consecutive WCC Tournament titles.
- GU owns the longest active win streak in the country at 20.
- The Zags are first in the nation in field goal percentage (53.4 percent), first in scoring margin (24.9), first in scoring offense (89.8), and first in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.79).
- Gonzaga set a new conference record this season, beating league opponents by an average of 27 points.
- Few was named the WCC Coach of the Year, Rui Hachimura was Player of the Year and Brandon Clarke was Defender and Newcomer of the Year.
- The Bulldogs carry a 17-game win streak in the WCC Tournament. GU has won in the WCC tournament semifinals in each of the past 21 years.
 
SERIES NOTES:
- This is the 88th all-time meeting between Gonzaga and Pepperdine.
- The Zags have a 56-31 advantage in the series, including 29-12 in the meetings in Spokane.
- GU has won 36 straight versus the Waves, with the last Pepperdine victory in the series coming on Jan. 18, 2002, 88-79.
- The Bulldogs are 40-2 against the Waves under Mark Few.
- Gonzaga won the only meeting this season, 92-64, in Spokane on Feb. 21. Rui Hachimura scored 23 points, leading four Zags in double figures.
- GU is 4-3 all-time versus Pepperdine in the WCC Tournament. After losing the first three matchups in the event against the Waves, the Bulldogs have won the last four.
- The programs have met only once while the tournament has been in Las Vegas, a 79-61 Gonzaga win over Pepperdine in the 2015 semifinals.
- The Zags won the only other WCC Tournament semifinal matchup with the Waves, 76-48, in 1996, in Santa Clara.
- The Bulldogs have won 21 in-a-row against Pepperdine in Spokane. The last time the Waves won at Gonzaga was on Feb. 19, 1998, 65-64.
- Gonzaga has won 16 in-a-row inside the Firestone Fieldhouse and is 22-17 all-time in the meetings in Malibu.
- Gonzaga won the first-ever meeting, 93-70, in the Knights
of Columbus Tournament in Portland, on Dec. 11, 1964.
 
SCOUTING THE WAVES:
- Pepperdine upset fourth-seeded San Francisco in the quarterfinals Saturday, 89-72.
- Colbey Ross scored 26 points and dished out nine assists for the Waves. Kessler Edwards added 14 points, while Eric Cooper Jr. and Darnell Dunn scored 13 and 12.
- Ross averages 19.4 points per game and has thrown a team-high 236 assists, which ranks fifth in the nation.
- Eric Cooper Jr. and Edwards chip in 10.5 and 10.1 points per outing. Cooper Jr. has made 80 three-pointers, shooting 41.7 percent from behind-the-arc.
 
ZAGS IN THE WCC TOURNAMENT
- GU is 56-15 all-time in the WCC Tournament with 16 titles and 24 finals appearances, including each of the last 21 seasons.
- The Zags carry a 17-game winning streak in the league tournament.
- That streak is the longest active such streak in the country, and the longest since Duke won 17 straight ACC Tournament games between 1999 and 2004.
- GU is 42-4 under Mark Few in the WCC Tournament with title-game appearances in all 19 seasons.
- Senior Josh Perkins is 9-0 in the WCC tournament games that he has played in.
- Gonzaga has won in the WCC tournament semifinals in each of the past 21 years. The Zags last loss in the WCC semifinals was 1994, 83-75, to San Diego in Santa Clara.
- The Bulldogs are 24-2 in semifinal games at the tournament, winning all 10 in Las Vegas.
- Gonzaga is 8-2 in the WCC Tournament finals played in Las Vegas, winning the last five titles.
- The Bulldogs are 17-7 in championship games at the tournament.
- Gonzaga has won the opening game of tournament the past 21 years, dating back to a loss in 64-59 in the 1997 quarterfinals to fourth-seeded San Diego as a fifth-seed.
- The Bulldogs are 26-6 in opening games at the tournament, including 14-6 in the quarterfinals (nine straight wins).
 
VIVA LAS ZAGAS
- Gonzaga has won seven of the last eight WCC tournaments in Las Vegas, including the last six.
- GU's six straight conference tournament titles is the longest active such streak in the country.
- The Zags are 23-2 in the West Coast Conference Tournament
since 2009, when the event moved to Las Vegas.
- Gonzaga's two losses in the tournament in Las Vegas have both been to Saint Mary's, the 2010 and 2012 finals.
- The Bulldogs were 33-13 in the conference tournament prior to it coming to Vegas.
- The Zags have never lost an opening game of the tournament in Las Vegas, winning all 10.
 
TOP DOGS AGAIN
- Gonzaga will be the top seed in the West Coast Conference Tournament for the 18th time.
- The Zags have won five straight WCC Tournament titles as the No. 1 seed.
- GU is 36-5 in the WCC Tournament as the one-seed.
 
THIRTY-WIN CLUB
- The Zags are one victory from a third-straight 30-win season. Only GU (29-2), Cincinnati (25-4), Kansas (22-7) and Villanova (22-8) reached 30 wins in each of the past two seasons. (Current record in parenthesis)
- Gonzaga was the first team in the nation to reach the 30-win plateau in each of the last two seasons.
- The Bulldogs have reached 30 wins in a season four times, all coming in the last seven years; 32-3 in 2012-13, 35-3 in 2014-15, 37-2 in 2016-17 and 32-5 last season.
- GU has finished a season with 29 wins three previous times.
