Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. — Third-seeded Gonzaga women's tennis put together a great performance in the opening round of the West Coast Conference Championships, defeating sixth-seeded BYU 4-1 on Thursday morning in Claremont, Calif.
he win advances Gonzaga (12-9) to the semifinal round to face second-seeded San Diego on Friday. GU took home the doubles point and then dominated singles on the way to the victory. All three singles wins were in straight sets, and the win avenged a loss to the Cougars earlier this season.
"I was really happy with our response today," head coach
D.J. Gurule said. "We felt we didn't compete very well in the middle of our season, so today was confirmation about the type of team we are. San Diego is a really tough team, so we will have our work cut out for us tomorrow."
The doubles point came down to a tiebreak on No. 2 for GU's
Haruna Tsuruta and
Kate Ketels. After GU's top duo of No. 23-ranked
Sophie Whittle and
Graciela Rosas won 6-4, BYU took Court 3 with an identical score. In the tiebreak on No. 2, Tsuruta and Ketels went on to take the final three points to win 7-6(7-3).
Then in singles, Whittle again got GU off to a good start, taking a 6-1, 6-0 win on No. 1 to put GU up 2-0. Tsuruta added a 6-4, 6-0 victory on No. 5 to make it 3-0 Zags before BYU got their first point of the day with a win on No. 6.
Gonzaga's
Vlada Medvedcova then clinched the match a short time later on No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
