SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's golf team released their 2019-20 schedule Friday. The Zags play in four events during the fall, beginning with the Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash., on Sept. 16, and then six tournaments in the spring.
"We're excited to get the team back on campus and preparing for our season," GU Head Coach
Robert Gray said. "We've got a new mix of events that will provide a strong schedule throughout the school year, and the team has been working hard on their games to be ready to go when they return.
"We only lost one team member to graduation last year and a lot of the returners saw competition. That was big for the experience level, as we were lacking it in regards to the whole squad when we headed into the season last year."
The Zags return to the Husky Invitational at the Gold Mountain Golf Club on Sept. 16. The two-day event is hosted by Washington. GU placed sixth at the tournament in 2015, led by a 12th place finish by Sean Walsh. Washington won the annual event last year at 21-over par.
On Oct. 1-2, the Bulldogs are back in the Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno, Calif. Fresno State hosts the sixth annual event at the Fort Washington Country Club. Watney turned pro in 2003 following a career at Fresno State from 2000-03. He has since earned 49 career Top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour. Nevada took the team title last year, while Gonzaga placed 10th. The Bulldogs were 14th in the event in 2017.
On Oct. 14, the Zags head to the Trysting Tree Golf Course for the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis, Ore. The two-day tournament will be played over 54 holes. GU came in 12th in the 2016 Northwest Classic hosted by OSU.
Once again, the Bulldogs close the fall at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in Lahaina, Hawaii, from Nov. 1-3. It's the sixth year of the growing event, and the sixth straight appearance from Gonzaga in the tournament. The field has included some of the top programs from across the country. Five years ago, the Zags recorded the program record for lowest team total in a round at 274. Last year at the tournament,
Charlie Magruder matched the third-lowest round in program history with his five-under, 66 final round finish.
Gonzaga makes its debut at The Joust hosted by California Baptist in Jurupa Valley, Calif. The Zags open their spring schedule on Feb. 24, at the two-day event at the Goose Creek Golf Course. This marks the first time that CBU will host The Joust in the D-1 era. The team last hosted this event in the 2017-18 season as a Div. 2 member.
On March 13-14, the Zags play in the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. GCU hosts the 54-hole tournament on its own 7,200-yard course.
The Bulldogs returns to Oregon for the Duck Invitational at the Eugene Country Club on March 23-24. It's the 31st edition of the tournament. GU was 15th at the event in 2017.
Gonzaga is back at the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational on March 30. The two-day event is in its seventh year at the prestigious Chambers Bay Golf Course, which hosted the 2015 U.S. Open. Some of the best programs on the west coast have appeared at the tournament over the past six seasons.
The Zags close their regular season slate at the Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah, April 24-25. BYU hosts the 54-hole event at the Riverside Country Club, which hosted the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships.
The 2020 WCC Championships will be played in Henderson, Nev., from April 30 to May 2. Gonzaga placed eighth at last year's conference championships.
