Women’s Tennis Downs Colorado State in Opener

Medvedcova finished off the match with a three-set win

DENVER, Colo. – Gonzaga women's tennis was taken to the wire by Colorado State, but held off the Rams in a 4-3 win in a neutral site match in Denver, Colo.

Gonzaga (1-0) dropped the doubles point, but battled back with four singles wins to take down Colorado State (0-1) in the first of a two-match weekend at Denver University.

"It was great to start the season with a team win," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "Vlada [Medvedcova] really stepped up when we needed her. We definitely need to clean some things up. We have a tough opponent tomorrow, but we are looking forward to the challenge."

Freshman Cate Broerman led off the singles play on No. 1 with a dominating 6-0, 6-3 win to tie the match at 1-1, but the Rams quickly took the lead back with a win at No. 3.

GU took the next two victories with wins from freshman Jenna Sloan and senior Taylor Gruber. Sloan tied the match 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win on No. 6, and Gruber earned a 7-6, 6-1 on No. 5 to give the Zags their first lead of the day.

After a CSU win on No. 2, it came down to GU's Medvedcova on No. 4. She won the first set, but lost the second, leaving the match up to the final set. After dropping the first game of the third set, Medvedcova won four of the next five games to take a 4-2 lead on the way to a 6-3 win.

GU's lone doubles victory came from its No. 3 duo of Haruna Tsuruta and Sloan, 6-2.

Gonzaga will be back on the courts against host Denver University on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT in Denver, Colo. Check GoZags.com for links to live scoring.
