WACO, Texas – Gonzaga men's tennis grabbed a 4-2 win over New Mexico on the final day of action at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Waco, Texas, on Sunday.
GU (3-2) dropped the doubles point, but came out on top of four singles matches to take the win over the Lobos (0-4).
"It was great to see us bounce back in singles, I think we showed grit across the board," head coach
Jonas Piibor said. "We are looking forward to getting back home and continuing to work on our craft to get better."
Theo McDonald got the scoring started for the Zags, tying the match at 1-1 with a 7-6(3), 6-4 win on Court 6. The Lobos took the next point with a win on No. 3, but it was all Zags after that.
GU's
Oliver Andersson tied the score 2-2 with a three-set win on Court 5. He came from behind after dropping the first set 3-6 and winning the next two 6-3, 6-2.
Sam Feit put GU ahead for good with the Zags' third point, a 7-5, 6-3 on Court 1.
The finishing point came in three sets by
Matthew Hollingworth on Court 2. He won the first set 6-4, but fell in the second 1-6. In the third, Hollingworth took the tiebreaker 7-6(5) to clinch the match for GU.
On the only remaining court,
Vincent Rettke had a 2-0 lead in the third set before the match went unfinished.
