Men’s Tennis Wins Two on Friday

GU defeated EWU 6-0 and Montana 4-3

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga men's tennis turned in a solid day at the Stevens Center with a pair of wins over Eastern Washington and Montana on Friday in Spokane, Wash.
GU started the day with a 6-0 win over EWU and then followed that up with a 4-3 win over Montana to move its record to 5-2 on the year.  
"We are still progressing, it's early in the season, but we have some pieces that I like and some pieces that we need to get better at. I thought crowd was great, and the Spokane support was great today."

Gonzaga got off to a hot start in doubles and carried the momentum into singles on the way to a 6-0 win. GU did not drop a set in any match against the Eagles.

The pair of Kyle Everly and Hunter Egger took a 6-3 win on No. 2, and Theo McDonald and Simon Homedes Dualde earned a 6-4 win on No. 3 to take the doubles point. GU's No. 1 pair of Sam Feit and Matthew Hollingworth were up 5-3 when the match went unfinished.

In singles, it was more of the same from GU as the Zags took all six first sets. Freshman Oliver Andersson had the dominant performance of the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win on No. 2.  

Matthew Perkins added a 6-3, 6-3 win on No. 5 to make it 3-0, and then Egger finished with a 7-6, 6-0 win on No. 4 to clinch the victory.

The Zags also got wins from Vincent Rettke on No. 1 and Bryan Husin on No. 6. Rettke won 6-4, 6-1, while Husin took a 7-5, 6-0 win. Everly was up a set when his match went unfinished, 6-4, 4-4.

Gonzaga 4, Montana 3
After dropping the doubles point, Gonzaga came out firing in singles, winning the first set on five of the six courts. GU surged into the lead in the match with three quick straight-set singles wins.

On No. 6, Everly took over early on the way to a 6-2, 6-1 victory, while McDonald did the same on the adjacent court. On No. 5, he won easily, 6-3, 6-2 to make it 2-1.

Sam Feit added the next win for GU on No. 1, cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 win for the 3-1 lead.

Freshman Matthew Hollingworth then stepped up to finish the match and give GU the win. After dropping the first set 4-6, Hollingworth was dominant the rest of the way, winning the final two sets 6-1, 6-4.
