SPOKANE, Wash.— Gonzaga men's tennis continued its winning ways in a 4-3 victory over Boise State on Sunday in Spokane, Wash, to move its record to 6-2 on the season.
Gonzaga came back from down a point twice in the match to earn the win over the visiting Broncos for the Zags' fourth straight victory. The match came down to senior
Sam Feit on Court 1 in the third set, and he delivered with the win.
"It was a gritty win for our squad," head coach
Jonas Piibor said. "Boise State is a good team, and we knew it would be a dogfight going into the match. It was fun for Sam to close it out in front of a great crowd. We are looking forward to continue building and improving as a team."
After Boise State won the first doubles match on No. 2, GU's No. 3 pair of
Hunter Egger and
Theo McDonald earned a 6-4 win. In a hard-fought battle on No. 1,
Sam Feit and
Matthew Hollingworth fell 7-6 (7-5), as the Broncos earned the doubles point.
In singles, the Zags began with a 6-0, 6-1 win on No. 6 from McDonald. On No. 3,
Vincent Rettke picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win to make it even at 2-2, but after BSU won on No. 4, the Zags' Hollingworth claimed a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win on No. 2 to tie it up at 3-3.
It all came down to Feit on No. 1. After a 7-5 victory in the first set and a 5-7 loss in the second, Feit got an early break-point to get the momentum on his side in the third. After Boise State tied it up at 4-4 with their own break, Feit again took the advantage with a break point to make it 5-4 before serving it out for the win.
