FRESNO, Calif. – Gonzaga men's tennis wrapped up the Pacific Central Valley Championship in fourth place after falling to San Francisco, 4-2, on Sunday in Fresno, Calif.
In the eight-team tournament, the Zags and Dons met in a non-conference neutral-site matchup and it was San Francisco that came out ahead after taking the doubles point and three singles points in a tightly-contested matchup.
Heading into singles down 1-0, Gonzaga took a pair of singles wins to bring it back to 3-2 with the remaining matches tied in the third set.
GU's wins came from freshmen
Oliver Andersson and
Brandon Park. On No. 3, Andersson took a straight-set 7-5, 6-2 win over USF's Ori Maior, and then on No. 6, Park defeated David Woodland in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
As the match came down to the wire, both
Vincent Rettke on No. 4 and
Matthew Hollingworth on No. 2 were tied in the third set, but Fresno State got the win on No. 2 for the clinching fourth point.
