SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Gonzaga's
Matthew Ruel and
Zach Stocker were named Academic All-West Coast Conference, while
Holden Backes,
Charlie Magruder and
Nick Nolan were selected honorable mention. The league office announced the All-Academic team and honorable mention selections Thursday.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team.
Ruel, who was Academic All-WCC honorable mention last season, appeared in five tournaments, and had a team-low 72.43 scoring average. He had four top-30 finishes in 2019-20. The Sports Management major has a 3.64 grade point average.
Stocker appeared in all five tournaments, with a 73.64 scoring average. He finished the season three-over relative to par. The sophomore carded season-low round of 69 in the final round of the Nick Watney Invitational. He has a 3.70 GPA and is an undeclared business major.
Backes and Magruder were honorable mention for the second consecutive year, and Nolan earns the honor for the second time in his career. Backes boasts a 3.90 GPA as a Business Accounting major. Both Magruder (3.47 GPA) and Nolan (3.42 GPA) are Business Administration majors.
