SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's tennis team defeated visiting Montana 7-0 Sunday afternoon inside the Stevens Center for its first sweep of the young season. The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.
"I was really please with how we competed from start to finish today," Head Coach
D.J. Gurule said. "I thought our team showed a lot of grit. We have some things we want to clean up, but I can see some progress from our first match."
Kate Ketels and
Adrianna Sosnowska started things off early, taking 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles over Julia Ronney and Olivia Oosterbaan. Haruna Tsruta and
Hannah Jones clinched the doubles point at No. 3 with a 6-4 victory over the Griz, while
Jenna Sloan and
Taylor Gruber added the exclamation point with a 7-6(7-1) win at No. 2.
In singles play, Sloan was the first Zag to secure a point as the Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., native secured a 6-1, 6-0 win over Montana's Ivayla Mitkova at the No. 5 position.
Cate Broerman followed suit, picking up the 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, while Sosnowska clinched the match point for the Zags with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Oosterbaan at No. 2.
"I think our team will only get better with more match play," Gurule said. "We are looking forward to hosting Oregon next weekend."
Gonzaga returns to the court Saturday, Jan. 30 as it hosts Oregon inside the Stevens Center. Match play is set to begin at 12 p.m. Check GoZags.com for up-to-date match information.
