PROVO, Utah – The Gonzaga women's tennis team fell at BYU 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Courts in Provo, Utah. The Zags are now 1-1 in West Coast Conference play.
BYU (14-6, 3-1 WCC) took the doubles point, winning with a 6-4 score on both No. 3 and No. 2 courts. On court one, the match was tied 5-5 between Gonzaga's
Hannah Jones and
Adrianna Sosnowska and the Cougars' Anastasia Abramyan and Helen Jiao but went unfinished.
In singles play, BYU took wins in straight sets in the first three matches with wins at No. 5 (6-0, 6-1), No. 6 (6-3, 7-5), No. 1 (7-6, 6-3). Sosnowska grabbed the first set win for the Zags, battling back after a 6-0 first set loss to take the second 6-2 and force a third set. BYU's Leah Heimuli took the third set 6-3 to take the three-set win at No. 2.
Gonzaga (9-4, 1-1 WCC) picked up its lone win of the day at No. 3 singles as
Cate Broerman battled for a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(10-7) win over BYU's Jiao. BYU won the final match at No. 4 singles 6-7, 6-3, 1-0(10-7) to take the match 6-1.
