SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team welcomes senior transfer Thomas Haan, as announced by Head Coach
Jonas Piibor Thursday morning. Haan, a three-year veteran from Portland, will arrive at Gonzaga with two seasons of eligibility left.
"Coach Cesar and I feel that Tom will be a great fit here in our program," Piibor said. "His experience level will definitely help us as we continue our work to reach new heights."
Haan, a native of Perth, Australia, collected a 34-29 overall singles record in three seasons with the Pilots, playing at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 positions over the course of his career. In doubles play, Haan was 24-22, playing most often at the No. 1 doubles position.
During his time in Portland, Haan was the 2019 Gonzaga Invitational Singles champion and doubles finalist, and he was also the 2019 UC Davis doubles finalist. At the 2019 Northwest Regionals, he advanced to the semifinals in doubles play, defeating the No. 58 ranked doubles duo in the quarterfinals by a score of 8-4. Haan was also part of Portland first-ever road win at Pepperdine in 2018; later that season, Haan was selected to the 2018 WCC Men's Tennis All-Tournament Team.
Prior to his collegiate career at Portland, Haan was the No. 2 ranked player in Western Australia, and the No. 72 rated player in all of Australia. He was the 2016 Western Australia Men's Tennis State Team Captain and was an All-Australia Tennis Team performer that same year.
Haan, who is currently working toward a bachelor's degree in accounting, is a two-time WCC All-Academic performer, and he's twice been named to the Dean's List.
Why Haan chose Gonzaga: Coach Piibor and Coach Rodriquez have transformed Gonzaga tennis into a team that has the capacity to win conference titles and contend at the national stage. The sense of community is strong at Gonzaga, and my familiarity with the region will allow me to adapt easily. Gonzaga is a prestigious research university that is generally regarded as one of the best private institutions of higher education in the country. The athletic department is fully committed to academic excellence and provides student-athletes with the opportunity to succeed with their athletic endeavors. I am convinced this institution will be a great fit for me.
