WBB Stays Undefeated in WCC, Defeats Saint Mary’s 66-53

The Truongs both score in double figures for the Bulldogs in the road win

MORAGA, Calif. – With double-digit efforts from both Truongs, the Gonzaga women's basketball team defeated Saint Mary's, 66-53, on the road.

Juniors Kayleigh Truong and Kaylynne Truong both scored 14 points against the Gaels. Sophomore Yvonne Ejim also scored in double digits, recording 13 points and six rebounds. Senior Melody Kempton had a team-high 10 rebounds and dished out four assists.

The Bulldogs shot at a 36.7 percent and came in clutch in free throws again as the team shot 81.8 percent from the charity stripe. Gonzaga forced 15 turnovers and scored 13 points off SMC's miscues. Overall, GU scored 28 points from inside the paint and had 32 come from off the bench.

Gonzaga also kept up its domination on the glass and outrebounded Saint Mary's 45-33.

In the first quarter, the Zags were led by Kayleigh Truong, who scored seven points and gave out an assist. After holding the Gaels to a 37.5 shooting percentage in the opening quarter, Gonzaga was up 18-17 after ten minutes.

Kaylynne Truong took over in the second and led the team with five points and two offensive rebounds. Ejim also scored four points and grabbed four rebounds.

At the half, Gonzaga led 29-25 and was shooting at 36.4 percent from the field, while Saint Mary's was shooting at 34.5 percent.

Coming out of the locker rooms, Kayleigh Truong led the team with four points in the third and grabbed a steal. The team also went 3-for-4 from the free throw line and senior Cierra Walker drained one from beyond the arc.

After three quarters, it was a one-point game between the two teams. GU took over in the fourth and had its best scoring performance of the game with 25 points. Both Kaylynne Truong and Ejim scored seven points as they both went 100 percent from the free throw line in the final quarter. Walker was right behind them with five points.

The Zags officially took their largest lead with just over four minutes remaining in the game after going on an 8-0 scoring run to secure the double-digit win. 

Records: Gonzaga improves to 14-4 in the season and 5-0 in the WCC. Saint Mary's fall to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

The Bulldogs now hold a 48-29 record of Saint Mary's and have won three-straight against the Gaels.
