WTEN: Gonzaga Battles, Broerman Shines at Day One of the ITA Regionals

The ITA Regionals continue tomorrow in Palo Alto, Calif.

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Earlier today, the Gonzaga women's tennis team opened their participation in the ITA Regionals in Palo Alto, California. This is the fifth tournament the Zags will perform in this fall, with the final tournament being the Gonzaga Invitational, which will be hosted at the Stevens Center from Oct. 28-30.

Gonzaga opened today's doubles competition with two dominant victories. Gonzaga's Kianna Oda paired with Tiegan Aitken to earn an 8-3 victory over Portland State's Makoto Ohara and Nell Arendt.

In the other doubles match of the day for Gonzaga, Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska defeated California State University—Fresno's Cristina Flaquer and Gianna Mastro by a score of 8-1. This is the most dominant doubles victory for the Gonzaga pair this season.

Moving to the singles Main Draw, multiple Zags picked up victories in the Round of 128. To start, Aitken picked up another victory as she defeated Santa Clara's Dasee Carter 6-4, 6-2 in straight sets. Shortly after, Gonzaga's Jenna Sloan clinched a 6-1, 6-0 win over the University of California—Berkeley's Cami Brown.

In Oda's first singles of the day, she battled, but lost a close match against San Francisco's Simran Chhabra by a score of 6-3, 6-4.

Later in the day, Sosnowska remained dominant as she claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win over the University of California—Davis's Michelle Zell. In the final Round of 128 singles match for the Zags, Broerman won in similar fashion, knocking off the University of California—Davis's Claire Galerkin 6-0, 6-2 in straight sets.

Moving to the Round of 64 of the singles Main Draw, Cal Poly's Kimberley Bhunu earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Aitken. Facing the University of California—Berkeley's Yinglak Jittakoat, Sloan battled, but lost 6-1, 6-0 in straight sets.

Later in the evening, Pacific's Tomi Main clinched a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sosnowska in their Main Draw Round of 64 singles match. Closing out today's action for the Zags, Broerman battled Washington's Ashley Chang, and claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory. With the win, Broerman advances to the Round of 32 of the singles Main Draw.

Tomorrow's action for the Zags will begin with Round of 32 of the doubles Main Draw, with Aitken and Oda facing the University of California—Berkeley's Makenna Thiel and Erin Richardson at 8:30 a.m. Shortly after, Broerman and Sosnowska will perform against Washington's Jennifer Kerr and Erika Matsuda at 9 a.m.

Broerman will continue her performance in the Main Draw of the singles competition tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., when she faces Cal's Makenna Thiel in the Round of 32. In the singles competition of the Consolation bracket, Oda will face San Jose State's Carolina Millan tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
