SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's tennis team began their performance in the Gonzaga Invitation earlier today. This is the second consecutive year that the Zags have closed out their fall season by hosting the Gonzaga Invitational at the Stevens Center.
Gonzaga opened up the tournament with two dominant victories in the doubles competition. To start, Gonzaga's Kianna Oda and Caroline Wernli earned a 6-2 victory over Montana State's JJ Chen and Felicia Jayasaputra in their Round of 16 match of the Blue Draw. This is the first time this season that Oda and Wernli have paired for doubles competition.
Shortly after, Gonzaga's Rose Hayes and Maria Frampton also found success in the Round of 16 match of the Blue Draw, defeating Idaho's Nicole Horacek and Saffron Dowse by a score of 6-4. This was Hayes's first time competing for the Zags this fall, as she joins the Gonzaga women's tennis team as a freshman and a former 5-star recruit and All-American.
Later in the day, Gonzaga continued to battle in the single competition. Facing Idaho's Saffron Dowse, Frampton lost her singles Round of 16 match of the White Draw 6-1, 6-0 in straight sets. Oda clinched a 6-4, 6-4 win over Eastern Washington's Isabella Foshee in her Round of 16 singles match of the Blue Draw.
In her Round of 16 match of the Red Draw, Wernli claimed a 7-6, 6-3 win over Portland State's Makoto Ohara. Closing out the first round of the singles competition, Hayes showed resiliency, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in her Blue Round of 16 match against Eastern Washington's Leandra Nizetic.
Transitioning to the second round of the Main Draw singles competition, Gonzaga continued to succeed against stiff competition. In her Blue Quarterfinals match, Oda clinched a competitive 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 victory against Montana's Hailey Murphy. Also playing in the Blue Draw singles Quarterfinals, Hayes defeated Idaho's Selin Sepken 6-4, 6-0 in straight sets. In her first time performing for the Zags, Hayes went an impressive 3-0 in her matches today.
In the final match of the day for the Zags, Wernli clinched a dominate 6-0, 6-2 win over Eastern Washington's Kenzington Mann in her Red singles Quarterfinals match.

Similar to today, Gonzaga will open tomorrow's action with two matches in the Blue double Quarterfinals. At 9 am, Oda and Wernli will face Idaho's Rachelle Starreveld and Lena Beckx, and Hayes and Frampton will face Eastern Washington's Isabella Foshee and Leandra Nizetic. After these matches, the Blue Semifinals of the doubles competition will be played.
For the singles competition, Oda will face Montana State's Marta Garcia-Reboredo in the Blue singles Semifinals at 11:30 am. Hayes will also compete in the Blue singles Semifinals, as she faces Portland State's Mariya Ponomareva at 11:30 am. The final singles match for the Zags tomorrow is also scheduled for 11:30 am, when Wernli will face Montana's Maria Goheen in the Red singles Semifinals.
