WTEN: Two Zags Clinch Championship Titles on Final Day of the Gonzaga Invitational

The Bulldogs conclude the fall season

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's tennis team finished their fall tournament season earlier today by winning two Championship matches at the finale of the Gonzaga Invitational.

Gonzaga picked up their first Championship win of the day in the Blue doubles Finals. Facing Montana State's Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Mirte Van Baelen, Gonzaga's Kianna Oda and Caroline Wernli clinched the Championship with a dominant 6-3 victory. Oda and Wernli finish the tournament undefeated, with an impressive match winning percentage of 70.6% (24-10).

In the Blue singles Championship match, Kianna Oda picked up her first Gonzaga Invitational singles Championship title in her time at Gonzaga. Performing against Portland State's Mariya Ponomareva, Oda clinched an excellent 6-4, 6-2 win in straight sets. Her second consecutive season making the Championship round, today's win clinched the Championship title that alluded her last year, when she fell to Zoey Weil in the Purple singles Championship.

Performing in the Red singles Championship, Wernli battled adversity and fatigue from a long weekend of tennis. Facing Montana State's Mirte Van Baelen, Wernli lost 7-5, 6-3 in competitive fashion. Even with today's singles loss, Wernli had an excellent tournament, ending with a 7-1 record in official matches.

Gonzaga's participation in the Gonzaga Invitational concluded with a singles match for senior Maria Frampton. In her practice match against Eastern Washington's Sara Vasic, Frampton battled back from losing the first set 3-6, winning the next two sets by a score of 6-4, 10-8.

Today's action concludes the fall tournament season for the Gonzaga women's tennis team. Including both practice and official matches, Gonzaga finishes the fall tournament season with an impressive 61-50 record, including an excellent 16-6 record in this weekend's Gonzaga Invitational tournament.
