SAN MATEO, Calif. – The Gonzaga women's basketball team has been voted to finish first in the West Coast Conference in preseason polls. Seniors Kayleigh
Truong, Kaylynne Truong and junior Yvonne Ejim were also named to the Preseason All-WCC Team as the poll and preseason all-conference team were announced Wednesday morning by the WCC.
The Zags received nine first-place votes that and totaled 81 points in the poll. The poll is voted on by the league's 10 head coaches, and coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team. Portland received one first-place votes and was selected to finish second with 71 points, while BYU was voted to finish third with 55 points.
Gonzaga has amassed a conference record of 257-33 (.886) during the last 17 seasons, which includes 16 West Coast Conference regular-season titles and nine WCC Tournament championships.
This is the first preseason nod for both Truongs and Ejim.
Ejim is the reigning WCC Sixth Woman of the Year while also receiving All-WCC Second Team in 2021-22. Last season, she saw action in 34 games with one start and ranked fourth on the team in scoring at 10.1 points per contest and second in rebounding with 5.6. She reached double figures 18 times on the season with a career-high 22 points against Portland on Jan. 6. In that same game, she hauled in 10 boards as she recorded two double doubles. Overall, she added 36 assists, a team-high 44 steals and 42 blocks on the season.
Kayleigh Truong earned All-WCC First Team honors after her performance in 2021-22. Kayleigh led the Zags last year with 11.2 points a game and recorded a team-high 117 assists on the year. She saw action in 31 games and started in 28 of those. She recorded double-digit scoring performances in 19 of those games with 20 points in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament against Nebraska. She also recorded a career-record of 11 assists against Pepperdine on Feb. 24.
Kaylynne Truong was named to the WCC Tournament team along with the Rainbow Wahine Showdown MVP as she was ranked third on the team in scoring last year. She played in 34 games for the Zags and started in seven of those. She averaged 10.4 points a game and dished out 115 assists for 3.4 a contest. Kaylynne also had 20 double-digit scoring games last year with a career-high of 21 against San Francisco on Feb. 12.
Fans will have an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the 2022-23 squad next Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Numerica Fan Fest at 4 p.m. in McCarthey Athletic Center. Admission is free and tickets are not required.
