WTEN: Zags Finish Up California Tournaments

The Bulldogs will compete at the ITA Regionals next weekend

CALIFORNIA -- Today marked the end of the Gonzaga women's tennis team's participation in the USC Hidden Duel and Long Beach State Tournament. After today's action, the Zags have a quick turnaround, as they will perform in the ITA Regionals in Palo Alto, California, from October 14th to 18th.

Facing the University of Arizona at the USC Hidden Duel, the Gonzaga women's tennis team looked to continue building their team chemistry before the upcoming spring season. Starting with the doubles competition, Gonzaga earned an early victory when Cate Broerman and Jenna Sloan defeated Arizona's Parker Fry and Midori Castillo-Meza by a score of 7-6. In the other doubles match, Gonzaga's Caroline Wernli and Tiegan Aitken battled, but lost 7-5 against Arizona's Kayla Wilkins and Reece Carter.

Moving to the singles competition, Gonzaga showed continued perseverance, as multiple matches were decided in a ten-point tiebreaker. While facing Castillo-Meza, Sloan showed resiliency, but dropped her singles match by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. In similar fashion, Fry earned a back-and-forth 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory over Wernli.

Broerman remained dominant in Gonzaga's final day of the USC Hidden Duel, as she defeated Carter 6-1, 6-2 in straight sets. The final singles match of the tournament for Gonzaga saw Wilkins clinch a 6-3, 6-2 win over Aitken.

At the Long Beach State Tournament, Maria Frampton battled against Grand Canyon's Aline Buhr but fell in a three-set match, 7-5, 4-6, 2-7, in their bracket. Kianna Oda played an extra match against CSUN's Emma Mortella and fell 6-4, 6-1.
