PROVO, Utah – In the last regular season road game, Gonzaga women's basketball traveled to No. 20 Brigham Young University and came up short, 63-39.
Senior Melody Kempton led the Bulldogs with 11 points and four rebounds. Junior Kayleigh Truong was the next highest scorer with nine points and two assists. Senior Abby O'Connor also grabbed a team-high six boards.
In the first quarter, Kayleigh Truong paced the Zags with seven points as the team scored 12. The Bulldogs grabbed 11 rebounds with senior Cierra Walker and Kempton both grabbing two. GU held BYU to a 36.4 shooting percentage and only 11 points total in the opening quarter.
The Zags had a 12-11 lead going into the second quarter, but BYU's Shaylee Gonzales scored eight points in ten minutes of action to help give the Cougars the 27-17 lead at the half.
Coming out of the locker rooms, Kempton led the Bulldogs in the third with six points and Kayleigh Truong scored two for Gonzaga's total scoring effort.
Going into fourth quarter, BYU was up 50-25. The Zags started the frame with back-to-back three pointers from Walker and redshirt sophomore Eliza Hollingsworth to cut the deficit to 19. The Bulldogs outscored the Cougars 14-13 in the final minutes with sophomore Yvonne Ejim scoring four.
Overall, Gonzaga shot at 25.5 percent as BYU shot at 45.1 percent. The Bulldogs won the boards battle with GU outrebounding BYU 37-35. Defensively, GU forced 10 turnovers and scored six points off those miscues.
Records: GU goes to 21-6 overall and 12-2 in WCC. No. 20/16 BYU is now 22-2 overall and 13-1 in the conference.
