Men's Track/XC Inks Three More to NLIs

Increases Incoming Class to Seven Runners

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga men's cross country and track head coach Pat Tyson announced the signing of three northwest-area runners to a National Letter of Intent Wednesday, increasing the Zags' incoming freshman class to seven.

Sean Janecko | Timberline HS | Boise, Idaho

A Boise, Idaho native, Janecko has PR'd in the 800 (1:56.17), 1500 (4:01.54) and 3200 (10:13.14) so far this outdoor season after a fall that saw him crack the Top 40 at the IDaho State Championships and post a 15:42.8 personal best in the 5K while winning the Gib Floyd Invitational.
"I chose Gonzaga because of its strong academic and athletic reputation," Janecko said. "When I visited, I knew it was the perfect fit for me and my future."

Tyson on Janecko: "Sean Janecko is going to develop into a fine runner for Gonzaga. He has marks of 1:56.17 and 4:16.57 going into his peak spring senior racing season.  Sean not only will help us in Cross Country but those marks show Sean's great range on the track.  Really excited to add him to the roster."

Caleb Richardson | Gonzaga Prep | Spokane, Wash.

A Spokane native from just down the street at Gonzaga Preparatory School, Richardson most recently finished 18th overall at the WIAA 4A State Championship Meet, placing in the Top Five of every GSL and district meet he competed in.

"I chose Gonzaga because I want to grow in all aspects of my life, scholastically, athletically, and socially," Richardson said. "During this college search, I've looked at countless schools, to try and see which would be the best to help reach my goals. I came to the conclusion that Gonzaga was the only school that I felt would help reach my aspirations collegiately and post collegiately."

Tyson on Richardson: "We got a good one in this late coming on prospect from Gonzaga Prep.  Team guy!  Highly competitive.  Caleb will develop into a major contributor for the Zags."

Thomas O'Neil | Canby HS | Canby, Ore.

O'Neil is having a dominant start to his outdoor season in 2022, having won every 1500 and 3K race he's competed in so far and coming in with a 1:53.80 personal best in the 800m with much of the peak season ahead. O'Neil's mother was a national champion for Oregon, Tyson's alma mater.

"I committed to Gonzaga because I admired the campus and the people," O'Neil said. "When I visited Gonzaga, the atmosphere was electric. Many of my mentors have attended the school, which inspired me to become a bulldog as well. Coach Tyson's former athletes have only had positive things to say about his coaching. I'm looking forward to starting my journey"

Tyson on O'Neil: "Thomas comes in with a lot of raw talent.  He has great range.  We are looking at developing O'Neil from 1500 up through the 3000 Meter steeplechase and 5000 meters."
