SAN MATEO, Calif. – Five Gonzaga men's tennis players were selected West Coast Conference All-Academic as announced by the league office Thursday morning. Three Zags—
Oliver Andersson, Matthew Hollingworth and Sasha Trkulja—were selected WCC All-Academic First Team while
Theo McDonald and Leon Roider picked up Honorable Mention honors.
This is the second-straight year that Hollingworth has made the first team as Andersson was named to the honorable mention team last year. This marks the first honor for Trkulja.
Participating on court two and three, Andersson had a singles record of 10-6 overall on the season. He went 6-9 doubles on the season with most of his matches being played on court two and three.
Hollingworth, who was also an All-WCC Singles Honorable Mention and All-WCC Doubles Second Team, recorded a singles record of 13-6 overall on the year, including a 5-4 conference record. Throughout the season, he played doubles competition with Trkulja in the No.1 spot.
Trkulja competed at the No. 1 spot for the Zags the whole season in both singles and doubles. The sophomore was also tabbed All-WCC Singles Second Team and All-WCC Doubles Second Team. He went 9-9 in singles with a doubles record of 10-11 on the year. Him and Hollingworth were ranked No. 25 in ITA doubles, which was a program record.
Overall, the Zags had one of the most successful seasons in program history. In head coach DJ Gurule's first season at the helm, the Bulldogs earned a program-record 18 dual wins. The overall 18-6 (.750) record is also the best dual record in program history, ahead of the current 10-4 (.714) record set in 2019-20.
The Zags set a new Gonzaga men's tennis record with nine dual sweeps this season, breaking the previous record of six dual sweeps set in the 1998-99 season. The Bulldogs broke the program record for the longest winning streak, which was set in the 2017-18 season, by winning eight straight duals between March 8 and April 9.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team and in at least their second year at their school.
