BERKELEY, Calif. -- Earlier today, the Gonzaga women's tennis team began their participation in the Cal Fall Invitational by having a promising first day at the tournament. This is the first time the Zags have performed at the Cal Fall Invitation since the 2019-2020 season.
Gonzaga's Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska found immediate success in their doubles matches. Facing San Jose State University's Irena Muradyan and Raquel Villain Pereira, Broerman and Sosnowska earned a gritty 8-6 victory. In their second match, Broerman and Sosnowska claimed another 8-6 win over University of California-Berkely's Erin Richardson and Hannah Viller Moeller.
In an unusual turn of events, Gonzaga's Caroline Wernli was paired with conference foe Saint Mary's University's Jamie Pope for her doubles matches. Opening up the day strong, Wernli and Pope defeated Santa Clara's Kacey Feng and Anna Semler by a score of 8-4. In a back-and-forth match, University of San Francisco's Hana Gamracy and Azaria Hayes earned an 8-6 win over Wernli and Pope in Gonzaga's final doubles match of the day.
Moving to the singles competition, Sacramento State University's Mayya Gorbunova clinched a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sosnowska.
Later in the day, Wernli won her singles match in straight sets, defeating Saint Mary's University's Madison Weekley by a score of 7-5, 6-2.
In the final singles match of the day for the Zags, Broerman battled against UC Davis's Arianna Stavropoulos and won 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
