WTEN: Gonzaga Defeats Montana and Seattle in Season-Opening Doubleheader

Zags go on the road to face WSU next

SPOKANE, Wash. --  Earlier today, the Gonzaga women's tennis team opened their 2023 spring season with two dominant victories over Montana and Seattle. This was the first doubleheader the Zags have performed in since the 2020-21 season, and marks the first time Gonzaga has opened a spring season with a doubleheader.
 
In their first duel match, the Gonzaga women's tennis team earned a commanding 7-0 victory over Montana. Starting with the doubles competition, Gonzaga seniors Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska clinched a 6-1 court one victory over Montana's Grace Haugen and Hailey Murphy. Shortly after, Montana picked up their lone victory of the day, as Lauren Dunlap and Rosie Sterk defeated Gonzaga senior Jenna Sloan and junior Tiegan Aitken 6-3 on court two. In the No.3 spot, the doubles point was clinched for Gonzaga when junior Kianna Oda and freshman Rose Hayes defeated Montana's Maria Goheen and Shivika Agrawal by a score of 6-1.
 
Gonzaga continued their dominance as the singles competition began. In the No.1 spot, Broerman claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Haugen. In similar fashion, Aitken clinched an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win against Montana's Nancy Cabanas on court five. Gonzaga earned their fourth team point, and their first duel victory of the season, when Hayes earned a 6-0, 6-3 court six victory over Agrawal. With the singles win, Hayes earned the first duel singles victory of collegiate career.
 
In the remaining three singles matches, Gonzaga continued to excel against talented competition. On court four, Oda battled, defeating Goheen by a score of 6-2, 6-4. Shortly after, Sloan breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 court three victory against Dunlap. In the final singles match, Sosnowska picked up a victory in the No.2 spot over Murphy, winning by a score of 6-4, 6-3.
 
Later in the day, Gonzaga earned another dominant duel victory, defeating Seattle 6-1. Opening up with the doubles competition, Seattle earned their only doubles win when Elena Kraleva and Liliya Dimova defeated Broerman and Sosnowska 6-2 on court one. In the No.2 spot, Aitken and Sloan picked up their first doubles win of the duel season when they defeated Seattle's Jade Quintana and Marija Elenova 6-3. The doubles point was clinched for Gonzaga when Hayes and Oda earned their second doubles win of the day, defeating Seattle's Mireia Fehr and Lola Tavar by a score of 6-0.
 
As the duel transitioned to the singles competition, Gonzaga clinched victories in five of the six matches. In the No.5 spot, Hayes was nearly flawless, defeating Quintana by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Shortly after, Gonzaga sophomore Caroline Wernli earned her first singles win of the season after collecting an impressive 6-0, 6-1 court six victory over Seattle's Shuanghui Huang. Gonzaga clinched the team victory over Seattle when Sloan won 6-1, 6-2 in her court two match against Dimova.
 
The singles competition remained competitive as Gonzaga completed their final three singles matches of the day. On court three, Oda defeated Elenova by a score of 6-4, 6-3. In the No.1 spot, Broerman battled, but dropped a back-and-forth match against Kraleva, losing by a score of 7-5, 6-4. In the final match of the day, Aitken won 6-7, 6-2, 10-2 against Tavar.
 
Up Next:
The Zags will look to build on their early-season success when they face Washington State in Pullman on January 22nd at 12 p.m. Gonzaga's matchup against Washington State will open up a three-match road trip, as the Zags will return to the Stevens Center to face Colorado on February 11th.
 
Records:
After today's doubleheader, the Gonzaga women's tennis team open their spring season with a 2-0 record. For Montana, today's loss moves their record this season to 0-2. Today's victory for Gonzaga marks the seventh straight sweep the Zags have earned when facing Montana. After the loss, Seattle's record on the year also moves to 0-2.
