Men's Tennis Sweeps Eastern Washington, 7-0

The Zags head on the road this weekend

SPOKANE, Wash. – Earlier this afternoon, the Gonzaga men's tennis team opened their spring 2023 season with a dual match against Eastern Washington University. This was the Zags first match against Eastern Washington since the 2020-21 season.

Gonzaga opened the match with a competitive doubles competition. In the No. 2 spot, Gonzaga senior Leon Roider and sophomore Arthus Bassetiere earned an excellent 6-2 victory over Eastern Washington's Steven Paz and Bruno Ortega. Shortly after, the doubles point was clinched for the Zags when junior Pablo Gomez Galvan and graduate student Tom Hann defeated Eastern Washington's Tyler Dalos and Brady Thomas by a score of 6-4 on court three. The doubles competition was concluded when Gonzaga senior Matthew Hollingworth and junior Sasha Trkulja earned a 7-6 win over Eastern Washington's Erik Sarlvik and Caden Kammerer.

In the singles competition, Gonzaga earned impressive victories on all six courts. On court four, Andersson opened his season in dominant fashion, defeating Ortega 6-0, 6-1 in straight sets. In similar fashion, Roider picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Thomas on court six. The team victory was clinched for Gonzaga when Hann earned a 6-4, 6-1 court five victory against Dalos.

Gonzaga remained dominant in the final three singles matches of the day. On court one, Trkulja shined, winning his match against Paz by a score of 6-0, 6-3. In the No.2 spot, Bassetiere claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sarlvik. Finally, Hollingworth closed out the day by picking up a 6-4, 6-3 court two victory against Kammerer.

Up next: Having secured their first win of the season, the Zags now turn their attention to their next dual match, which is against the University of Texas—Arlington on January 21st at noon. This match will open a five-game road trip of non-conference games for the Zags, including their participation in the ITA Kick-Off on January 28th and 29th. Gonzaga will return to the Stevens Center on February 4th, when they face the University of Idaho at 2 p.m.

Records: With today's win, the season record for the Zags improves to 1-0. For Eastern Washington, their record moves to 0-1 with the loss. The victory also marks Gonzaga's ninth straight-victory and fifth-straight sweep over Eastern Washington, having last lost to the Eagles during the 2011-2012 season.
