ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – The Gonzaga men's tennis team earned their second victory of the season earlier today, defeating the University of Texas-Arlington by a score of 5-2. Today's matchup was the first recorded meeting between the Zags and UT-Arlington.

Gonzaga opened strong with a dominant performance in the doubles competition. Facing UT-Arlington's Anton Shepp and Santiago Giamichelle, Gonzaga's Sasha Trkulja and Matthew Hollingworth earned a 6-3 court one win. The doubles point was clinched for Gonzaga when Leon Roider and Arthus Bassetiere defeated UT-Arlington's Solano Caffarena and Lachlan Robertson by a score of 6-2 on court two. With the doubles point already clinched, the match between Gonzaga's Tom Hann and Pablo Gomez Galvan and UT-Arlington's Daichi Akiyoshi and Joan Torres Espinosa went unfinished, ending with a score of 5-4.

Transitioning to the singles competition, the Zags found victories in four of the six matches. Performing on court four, Andersson clinched a 6-2, 6-1 victory over UT-Arlington's Dante Teramo. Shortly after, Roider picked up a 6-4, 6-4 court six win over Robertson. UT-Arlington earned their first team point of the day when Shepp defeated Trkulja by a score of 7-6, 6-3 on court one.

The final three singles matches of the day saw Gonzaga thrive against tough competition. In the No.2 spot, Bassetiere earned a 7-6, 6-2 win over Caffarena. UT-Arlington earned their second, and final, team point of the matchup when Espinosa claimed a 6-4, 7-5 win over Hann on court five. In the final singles match of the day, Hollingworth battled, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 against Giamichelle in the No. 3 spot.

Up next: After earning an impressive victory over UT-Arlington, the Zags have a quick turnaround, as they are scheduled to face the University of New Mexico on January 22nd at 10 am. The Gonzaga men's tennis team will return to Spokane on February 4th, when they face the University of Idaho at 2 pm at the Stevens Center.
