BOSTON, Mass. – The Gonzaga track team opened their 2023-24 indoor season at Boston University on Saturday with two new program records, led by
Rosina Machu's 14th place finish in the women's 5000m race. Five female and two male runners competed on the day in a national spotlight as the nation's top teams/runners took part at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
THE WOMEN
Kristen Garcia was the first Zag woman across the finish line on the day, narrowly missing a new PR in the mile with a 16th place, 4:48.57 time. The race marked Garcia's first competitive race since the 2022-23 track season, with just one season left of eligibility in track this year.
Alicia Anderson was the first Zag across the finish line in the 3000m race, pacing a new program indoor record with a 9:29.80, 42nd place finish. Anderson's record breaks Garcia's 9:30.61 set last spring. In her collegiate track debut,
Jessica Frydenlund set a now program third-best 3000m time of 9:33.72, sitting behind Anderson's new record and Garcia's previous.
Machu, just two weeks after earning All-America and West Coast Conference Women's Runner of the Year honors at the end of the Cross Country season, made the biggest buzz of the afternoon with a 14th place, 15:37.05 finish in the women's 5000m race. Her time shattered the previous program indoor 5000m record by over 45 seconds (16:23.54,
Caramia Mestler in February 2023).
Sadie Tuckwood ran in her indoor 5000m debut race with Machu, setting a program sixth-best time of 16:55.0 as the GU women's final finisher of the day.
THE MEN
Bryce Cerkowniak opened the day for Gonzaga in the early section of the men's 5000m race (unseeded), setting a 17-second PR with a fourth place finish. His 14:11.21 is now seventh-best in program history.
Transfer
Drew Kolodge made his GU track debut in the final event of the day and final section of the men's 5000m, notching the fourth-best time in indoor program history at 14:03.07.
