MTEN: Gonzaga Dominates and Sweeps Montana 7-0

The Zags hit the road for five matches

SPOKANE, Wash. – Earlier this afternoon, the Gonzaga men's tennis team faced the University of Montana in a nonconference dual match. This marks the fifth straight year the Zags have faced the Grizzlies, earning an impressive 4-1 record in that stretch.
 
Opening with the doubles competition, Gonzaga's Sasha Trkulja and Matthew Hollingworth made a statement, winning their doubles match against Montana's Gustav Theilgaard and George Russell by a score of 6-1. Trkulja and Hollingworth, who are currently ranked #41 nationally for doubles, have an impressive 4-0 record this season in doubles competition. The doubles point was clinched for the Zags when Leon Roider and Arthus Bassetiere defeated Montana's Moritz Stoeger and Guillermo Martin 6-2 in dominant fashion.
 
With the doubles point already clinched for the Zags, the court three match between Gonzaga's Tom Hann and Pablo Gomez Galvan and Montana's Tom Bittner and Fernando Perez went unfinished, ending with a score of 3-4.
 
Moving to the singles competition, Gonzaga earned impressive victories in all six singles matches. In the No.1 spot, Trkulja earned his third singles win of the season when he defeated Theilgaard by a score of 6-1, 7-5. Shortly after, Bassetiere earned a 6-2, 6-3 win against Bittner on court two. The team victory was clinched for Gonzaga when Hann claimed a 6-4, 6-2 court five victory over Montana's Sam Baldwin.
 
On court three, Andersson battled back from being down 0-3 in the first set, winning his match against Stoeger by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Gonzaga earned their sixth team point when Hollingworth defeated Perez 6-3, 6-4 on court four. In the final singles match of the day, Gomez Galvan clinched a 6-3, 7-6 court six victory against Montana's Baltazar Wiger-Nordas.
 
Up next: Following today's victory, the Gonzaga men's tennis team open a five-game road trip, with their first match scheduled against the UCLA on Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. The Zags will return to Spokane on March 24, when they will open conference play against BYU at 3 p.m.

Records: The season record for the Gonzaga men's tennis team improves to 5-2 with the win. For Montana, their record on the year moves to 4-4 with the loss. The historical record between the Zags and Grizzlies moves to 8-9 in favor of the Grizzlies following today's match.
