MTEN: Gonzaga Battles, Drops Close Match Against #27 San Diego, 4-3

The Zags continue conference play next week at San Francisco

SPOKANE, Wash. – This afternoon, the Gonzaga men's tennis team continued conference play against the University of San Diego. Entering the match, both Gonzaga and San Diego were undefeated in conference play this season, holding a combined 5-0 record against conference foes.

 

In potentially the most intense doubles competition of the year, San Diego got off to an early lead when Oliver Tarvet and Stian Klaassen earned a 6-4 court two win over Gonzaga's Leon Roider and Arthus Bassetiere. Gonzaga tied the doubles competition when Sasha Trkulja and Matthew Hollingworth defeated San Diego's Iiro Vasa and Sacchitt Sharma by a score of 7-6 on court one. In the No.3 spot, Gonzaga clinched the doubles point when Tom Hann and Pablo Gomez Galvan picked up a 7-6 victory against San Diego's Marvin Schaber and Lambert Ruland. 

 

As singles matches began, San Diego tied the competition when Neo Nieder clinched a 6-2, 6-2 court six win over Gomez Galvan. Gonzaga reclaimed the lead when Trkulja earned an impressive 7-6, 6-1 victory against Vasa in the No.1 spot.Today's match marks Trkulja's fourth singles victory of the season. Once again, San Diego tied the match when Sharma defeated Hollingworth on court four, ending with a score of 6-2, 7-5.

 

San Diego built on their lead when Tarvet picked up a 6-4, 7-5win against Andersson on court two. Shortly after, Bassetiere bounced back after losing the first set 5-7, winning his next two sets against Klaassen by a score of 6-4, 6-0 on court two. With the match tied 3-3, San Diego clinched the team victory when Schaber claimed a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 court five win against Hann.

 

Up next: After today's match, the Gonzaga men's tennis team will travel to California to play the University of San Francisco on March 31st at 12 pm, and Santa Clara on April 1st at 1 pm. The Zags will return to the Spokane on April 7th, when they will play Pepperdine at 1 pm at the Stevens Center.

Records: The record on the year for the Zags drops to 6-7following today's loss. For San Diego, the win improves their season record to 13-5. The historical record between the Zags and Toreros also moves to 0-1in favor of San Diego after today's match.
