WTEN: Zags Fall to San Diego, 7-0

The Bulldogs return home on Wednesday to play Santa Clara

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Earlier this afternoon, the Gonzaga women's tennis team continued their spring conference season with an away match against the University of San Diego. Entering the match, San Diego was ranked #39 nationally, with one doubles pair and three individual players ranked within the top #100 across the country.

In the doubles competition, San Diego got off to an early lead when Claudia De Las Heras and Jordyn McBride defeated Gonzaga's Kianna Oda and Rose Hayes by a score of 6-4 on court two. In the No.1 spot, San Diego clinched the doubles point when Kailey Evans and Elizabeth Goldsmith claimed a 7-5 victory against Gonzaga's Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska.

The court three match between Gonzaga's Tiegan Aitken and Jenna Sloan and San Diego's Solymar Colling and Filippa BruuSyversen went unfinished, ending with a score of 5-6.

Moving to the singles competition, San Diego built on their lead when McBride defeated Aitken 6-2, 6-3 on court five. Shortly after, Evans picked up a 6-2, 6-2 court four win over Sloan. San Diego clinched the team victory when De Las Heras earned a 6-1, 7-6 victory against Sosnowska on court two.

San Diego also found victories in the remaining three singles matches. In the No.6 spot, Hayes battled, but dropped her match against BruuSyversen, ending with a score of 6-1, 6-3. On court one, Colling clinched a 6-4, 6-4 win over Broerman. In the final singles match of the day, San Diego's Abigail Desiatnikov earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Oda in the No.3 spot.

Up Next: Following today's match, the Zags will return to Spokane to face Santa Clara on Wednesday, March 29th at 4pm. Gonzaga will also face the University of San Francisco on Sunday, April 2nd at 11 am in the Stevens Center.

Records: The season record for Gonzaga drops to 9-8 following today's loss. For San Diego, their record on the year improves to 8-6. The historical record between the Zags and Toreros also moves to 4-10 in favor of San Diego.
