CHENEY, Wash. – The Gonzaga volleyball team fell in straight sets to Eastern Washington on Thursday. Despite a roaring start by the Zags, EWU took command and the eventual 26-24, 25-22, 25-17 sweep on Reese Court.
THE ACTION
First Set – Eastern Washington, 26-24
- Eastern Washington (5-5) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first, as Sage Brustad and Sadie Bacon recorded early kills. Gonzaga (3-6) responded to take a 5-4 lead with the help of some offense from Jody Smith and Zoe Thiros and defensive efforts from Fallon Thompson.
- GU and EWU battled back-and-forth through the midway point in Set One, as Thompson and Juliette Russell fueled a 3-0 Gonzaga run heading into the first media timeout, teaming up for back-to-back blocks to take a 15-14 lead.
- Both squads traded points as the score stayed within one, until a pair of Viktoriya Ivanova aces and an Autumn Larson kill forced an Eagle timeout with the Bulldogs leading 20-17. Another GU run, this time a 3-1 stretch forced EWU to take their second timeout of the set. 23-18 Gonzaga.
- The Zags looked to take the first, reaching set point at 24-19. The Eagles responded with three straight points to force a GU timeout. The run continued for Eastern as they erased a five point deficit amidst a 7-0 run to flip the score and win the first set, 26-24.
Second Set – Eastern Washington, 25-22
- Like they did in the first, the Eagles grabbed an early lead from a couple of Bri Gunderson kills. In response, Ivanova capped a 3-0 Gonzaga run with her third ace of the match to knot the score at 6-6.
- Larson and Thiros carried the GU offense through the halfway point of the second, each picking up three kills despite the Zags trailing 15-12.
- Gonzaga looked to close the gap after a successful challenge drew the Bulldogs to within two (17-15). A Thiros kill and an EWU attack error brought the set to a 17-17 tie, as the two teams began another back-and-forth battle.
- Eastern Washington pulled away amidst an 8-5 run at the end of Set Two to win 25-22 and take a 2-0 match lead.
Third Set – Eastern Washington, 25-17
- Gonzaga trailed early in the third, despite Larson reaching double-digit kills. The Bulldogs trailed by as many as nine before a 4-0 run shrunk the Eagle lead to just five, down 14-9. Thiros tacked on three kills to join Larson in double figures as GU clawed back to within three, now trailing 15-12.
- Despite a valiant effort by the Zags late in Set Three, Eastern Washington would widen the lead to six, putting the set almost out of reach. A 5-2 final push sealed the third set and 3-0 sweep.
