WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Gonzaga cross country earned a program sweep at the Whitman Invitational Saturday at Veterans Memorial Golf Course as both teams were victorious by double figures. The GU women won the meet in their first-ever appearance while the men secured their second-straight title.
Anna Grabowski was the leader for the Gonzaga women on Saturday, earning her first collegiate win with a time of 21:30.0 to lead a 6K podium sweep for the Zags.
Kate Donaldson (21:38.4) and
Jasmine Nguyen (21:53.4) finished second and third behind Grabowski, while
Anika Jones (ninth, 22:36.5) and
Camille Broadbent (11th, 22:39.9) rounded out the Bulldogs' 26 team points.
In the men's 8K,
Nick Braz finished in third place with a time of 24:32.5, edging out
Jerry Mackie's fourth-place, 24:32.8 finish.
Samy Anderson (seventh, 24:43.4),
Sean Janecko (eighth, 25:01.90), and
Caleb Richardson (tenth, 25:04.2) each placed in the top ten to complete Gonzaga's 23 team-point outing.
Northwest Nazarene's Brody Kemble was the men's individual champion, posting a time of 24:30.9. The Nighthawks finished second as a team with 47 points. On the women's side, Washington State placed second as a team with 42 points.
The GU women have now won three of their first four meets this season, while the men have won two. Individually, three total Zags have first-place finishes.
UP NEXT
The No.18/RV Bulldogs will head their separate ways for the next two weeks before meeting up in Lewiston, Idaho for the Inland Empire Classic on Oct. 19. Until then, the GU men will head to Springfield, Ore., for the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Oct. 11, while the Zag women make the trip to College Station, Texas for the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Oct. 18.
