SPOKANE, Wash. – Marissa Garcia scored both goals in Gonzaga women's soccer's 2-0 shutout win over Pacific at Luger Field Wednesday.
The Bulldogs (9-7-2, 5-3-1 West Coast Conference) remained hot, winning their fourth out of the last five matches. It was the final regular season home game, with one match remaining at Loyola Marymount Saturday. With 16 points in the conference standings, GU is just two points shy of first place Pepperdine and remains in contention to defend their league title.
Gonzaga sits in sole possession of fifth place in the WCC standings. To claim the regular season title, the Bulldogs would need a victory at LMU Saturday, along with a San Francisco win at Pepperdine, a Saint Mary's win at Santa Clara, and a home win for Portland over Oregon State.
Wednesday, GU possessed the ball for 54 percent of the match, outshot Pacific 18-5, and had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Zags finished with 10 shots on goal, while the Tigers (2-16-1, 0-9-0 WCC) had three.
Garcia's first goal came in the 14
th minute off an assist from
Amelia Severn. The assist was number seven on the season for Severn, which is tied atop the conference. She has five in league play, which is tied for first in the WCC with teammate
Emelia Warta.
Warta was credited with the assist on Garcia's 72
nd goal on an impressive through ball to set up the score. Garcia moves into fifth in program history with 22 career goals. Her 55 points are also fifth all-time at GU.
Gonzaga forced the Tigers' Hannah McFarlane into eight saves.
Lauren Towne made three saves in the Zag net.
