SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Gonzaga women's basketball team opened West Coast Conference play with a 73-58 loss to San Francisco on the road.
Yvonne Ejim led the Zags (5-7) with 20 points. It was the eighth time this season that she has scored 20 points or more for Gonzaga.
Allie Turner was another Bulldog to score in double digits with 11.
Maud Huijbens led GU in rebounding with six rebounds and also recorded 11 points.
At the end of the first half, GU trailed 31-17. Ejim led the Bulldogs with seven points and three rebounds. The Zags forced 10 turnovers from the Dons (4-6) as USF outrebounded Gonzaga 22-17 in the opening half.
The Zags went on a 7-0 run in the third quarter to cut their deficit to 44-33. In that time GU also forced four turnovers from San Francisco. The Bulldogs outscored San Francisco, 20-16, in the third as both Ejim and Turner scored six points each.
After a pair of made free throws from Ejim, GU pulled within nine points with just under five minutes remaining. The Dons went on to hold onto their lead the rest of regulation.
Notes: Ejim has now scored double digits in 54-straight games. She has scored 1,887 points at Gonzaga. This also marks the eighth time this season that she has scored 20 points or more in a game.
