SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga women's soccer picked up the first win in the
Katie Benz head coaching era with a 2-0 shutout over Kansas State at Luger Field Sunday.
The Bulldogs (1-1-1) controlled the match, outshooting KSU 19-5, and possessing the ball for 57 percent of the game. GU was on the attacking end of the field for 77 percent of its possession. The Zags also had a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal and 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
Alexis Parker opened the scoring with her first career goal in the 37
th minute. She slid in a shot to the far post after a pass from
Annie Boyden.
In the 55
th minute,
Chelsea Le found the back of the net for the third time in her career. She struck in a loose ball in the box to the top left-hand corner of the goal.
Gonzaga forced the Wildcats' (1-2-0) Murphy Sheaff into seven saves.
Lauren Towne had one save in the Bulldog net.
Erin Ewers and
Emelia Warta both took a match-high four shots. Warta placed three on frame.
The Zags return to the road for three straight matches. GU is at No. 9 Arkansas (2-0-1) next Thursday at 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
