SEATTLE, Wash. – Wil Smith is the only Gonzaga men's track athlete to ever run a mile in under four minutes. At Washington's Mile City meet at Dempsey Indoor on Saturday, he notched that feat for the third time in his collegiate career. In the men's invite section of the event, Smith ran a 3:59.12 to mark his third-straight indoor season with a sub four-minute time.
In an event that lasted over three hours and saw 48 total mile heats, Washington's Mile City is one of the region's biggest events of the early indoor track season. On Saturday, the Zag men raced six harriers in the event led by Smith, who ran in the second-fastest heat. The senior placed 15th overall, running the second-fastest mile of his career just one year after his personal best at the same event.
Next in line for the Bulldogs was
Jacob Alfonso (33rd, 4:06.95), who ran two seconds faster than his previous personal best to jump into No. 8 all-time in GU history.
Logan Law finished 37th in 4:08.00, just two seconds off of his PR that ranks sixth-best at Gonzaga.
Cooper Laird just missed the Top 50, placing 51st in 4:15.19.
The five fastest heats of the Mile City event were categorized as the invite portion and were raced slowest to fastest. Later Saturday afternoon, 26 more heats ran in the same manner.
Mason Kissell and
Drew Kolodge ran in the two fastest heats of the later portion after just missing a bid into the invite section.
Both Kissell and Kolodge took on the challenge, each recording three-second PRs in back-to-back heats. Kolodge ran a 4:16.80 (21st) in the penultimate heat before Kissell dipped under 4:10 for a 4:08.73, placing second overall and just 0.34 seconds behind the winner in Colin Peattie of Santa Clara.
