BERKELEY, Calif. – The Gonzaga women's tennis team opened the first day of the 2025 ITA Division I Northwest Regional Championships, hosted by the University of California, Berkeley.
In singles,
Brooke Bittner won two matches on the day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Oregon. In the next round, she won 6-4 in both sets against Santa Clara. She moves on to the main draw witrh the two wins. Madeline MacNeille won her first match with the first set 6-4 before her opponent retired. She fell in the next round in three sets against Oregon.
Ella Nielsen had a three set battle as well and won over EWU, 6-3, 6-1 7-6.
In doubles,
Emily Robertson and
Elizabeth Tindera faced Madison Weekley and Sofia Daryaie from Saint Mary's in a close, competitive match and won 8-3. The Gonzaga duo stayed aggressive but came up short, falling 4–8 after several long games that could have gone either way.
Brooke Bittner and
Karla Brown took on another Saint Mary's pair, Iman Khan and Sophie Stanton. The Zags showed great communication and fought hard through every point, pushing rallies deep and staying focused under pressure. Despite their effort, they dropped the match 4–8 in a series of tightly contested games.
On Court 3, Maddy MacNeille and
Ella Nielsen battled against Tianmei Wang and Sein Myoung from Stanford. The pair stayed competitive throughout, keeping the score close with smart plays, but eventually fell 5–8.
The experience from the first day gave the Zags a chance to build rhythm and chemistry early in the season. Gonzaga will look to carry this effort into the upcoming rounds as play continues through the weekend in Berkeley.
