SPOKANE, Wash.- Gonzaga Volleyball defeated Loyola Marymount University (CA) in four sets on Thursday evening to move to secure double digit wins on the season with their 10th victory.
The Zags captured the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-16 before LMU captured the third 25-21. The Zags then closed the match with a 25-21 set four victory. Gonzaga's first set victory was led by a .351 hitting percentage in the first frame. They got out to a 10-4 lead in the first and never looked back thanks to their incredibly effective offensive efforts.
Gonzaga then surged ahead in the second set with a strong start, led by two back to back kills by
Fallon Thompson to collect another insurmountable lead. Thompson had a particularly impressive play where she scored a dig and kill on the same sequence while falling to her left to save an attack from LMU's Madeline Boerstra.
Sjakkie Donkers scored two aces in a span of three serves to lock down the set.
LMU went on a 5-0 run to close the third set to continue the match and force a fourth set. The Zags reestablished a huge lead, frustrating the LMU offense as they held them to only a .124 hitting percentage in the entire match. The Martin Centre crowd grew increasingly loud throughout the match after a series of reviews and a yellow card for an assistant coach for LMU, powering the Bulldogs to another victory.
Donkers led the match with 16 kills, and tied the match lead for aces with three.
Kate Herrick also had three aces, complimenting her 31 assists, a new career high.
Kelly McAuley continues to impress in her freshman season, amassing 13 kills and 9 digs tonight.
The Zags will look to continue their momentum and ascent up the WCC conference standings on Saturday when they take on Saint Mary's (CA) at noon. The Zags currently sit tied for sixth in the conference and would move into the top five spots with a win in Spokane on Saturday.
