Volleyball swept by Saint Mary’s on Saturday

Moraga, Calif- Zag Volleyball (13-12, 6-8) lost in straight sets to Saint Mary's (9-16, 7-7) on Saturday.

Saint Mary's captured the three sets by a scoreline 25-20, 25-23 and 25-22 in an afternoon where the Zags couldn't get consistent offense in place.

Gonzaga was held to just a .179 hitting percentage, struggling to get consistent kills in the match. The first period got away from the Zags thanks to this low hitting percentage, as they failed to get more than 13 kills in any set tonight.

The Gaels were held to a .122 hitting percentage in the second, but the Zags were unable to capitalize on their successful defense after they also hit only .062 and gave away nine points on hitting errors.

Saint Mary's was able to secure the final set thanks to a decisive 7-2 run, including a run of back to back aces by Abby Castillon. GU lost the service ace battle by 8-3. Sjakkie Donkers led the match with 13 kills, while Saint Mary's was ultimately successful thanks to a balanced attack that had five different players score at least five kills.

Gonzaga will look to get some consistency back when it continues a WCC road trip, heading to Seattle on Thursday night before returning to Spokane for senior day on Saturday.
