MISSION BAY, Calif. – Gonzaga men's rowing began its spring slate on Saturday at the San Diego Crew Classic, winning two prelim heats and placing third in another.
In the prelims of the Cal Cup, the Varsity 8 paced their heat with a time of 6:04.192, nearly 15 seconds ahead of the next finishers. Of the 15 entries in four heats, the Bulldogs had the third fastest time, trailing only UC-Berkeley (5:55.344) and UC-San Diego (6:01.245).
Gonzaga's Novice 8 also won their prelims, crossing the finish line at 6:30.239, over 20 seconds before UC-Davis. In the other novice heat, Orange Coast College had a time of 6:18.701 and UCLA finished in 6:35.537.
The second varsity eights had only one prelim heat, with GU finishing third in 6:17.192 — behind UC-San Diego (6:10.039) and San Diego (6:14.951).
Gonzaga's third varsity eights will battle head-to-head against UC-San Diego on Sunday.
