SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga scored 14 runs in a blowout win over San Francisco on Saturday at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field. Leading 7-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs plated seven runs to put the mercy rule in effect before closing the door in the top of the seventh.
Gonzaga (14-14, 7-1 WCC) evens their record for the first time since game two of the season, while San Francisco (14-17, 4-4 WCC) drops their fourth straight game. The Bulldogs are 12-2 in their last 14 games after beginning the season 2-12.
GU opened the scoring early in the second inning, plating five runs on four hits, including a two-run single by
Hudson Shupe. Then in the third,
Tommy Eisenstat lifted his second home run of the season, nearly clearing the netting above the right field wall to make it 7-0 Bulldogs.
The Zag offense struck again in the sixth, adding seven runs on six hits to put the game out of reach.
Josh Hankins picked up two hits in the inning alone as the Bulldogs sent 12 batters to the plate and expanded to a 14-1 lead.
Miles Gosztola (W, 3-5) didn't need much run support on Saturday, pitching six complete innings while allowing just one run on three hits and striking out six. He would give way to
Kai Francis in the seventh, who threw just nine pitches to close out the game.
Ty Yukumoto was 2-for-2 atop the Gonzaga lineup in game two, adding two runs and two walks to his line. Hankins finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, and
Mikey Bell went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
As a team, the Bulldogs have recorded 10+ hits in each of their last seven games, including 12+ hits in each of their last five.
