Zags Fall in Extra Innings in Season Opener

HONOLULU, Hawaii- Gonzaga Baseball dropped the season opener in heartbreaking fashion, losing 3-2 on a Hawaii walk off in the tenth inning.

Hawaii opened the scoring, plating the lead runner in the second inning off of a dropped pop fly to left field. Wind in the left field alley was an issue for both teams, as the Zags got a man in scoring position in the third thanks to an error by UH in the same spot, although GU was unable to convert.

Gonzaga tied the game in the fourth inning, as Tommy Eisenstat hustled for an infield single before Ryder Young advanced him to third with a double. Landon White collected his first RBI as a Zag when he knocked in Eisenstat in the next at bat.

The Rainbow Warriors responded by scoring the following inning, getting a runner on via a walk before manufacturing a run with a hit and a fielder's choice.

The game was a solid pitcher's duel through the first five innings, with both teams going hitless with runners in scoring position in the first five frames (0-6 for GU, 0-10 for Hawaii). Gonzaga ended the game 1-9 with runners in scoring position while Hawaii was 0-13.

The Zags rallied in the eighth thanks to a leadoff hit by Noah Meffert, followed by a RBI from Young, bringing the game to 2-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Zach Bowman was very solid in relief, tossing 4.2 innings and logging seven strikeouts. He was able to work out of several dangerous Hawaii rallies, including an eighth inning that threatened with a runner on second with two outs.

The Zags eventually gave up the game in the tenth, giving up two quick singles before a throwing error by Mikey Bell on a difficult bunt went awry, allowing Hawaii to walk off their home opener for the second straight season.

Hawaii's Isaiah Magdaleno was impressive, giving up only three hits in six innings, making it tough for the Zags to piece together offense. Beyond the emergence of Bowman as a strong new arm, Zag fans can also be encouraged by Ryder Young's play on the night. Young went 3 for 4 and had two doubles in his Zag debut.

The Zags will look to take the second game of the series in Hawaii on Saturday. First pitch is set for 8:35 pm.
