Box Score SAN MARCOS, Texas- Gonzaga Baseball (1-4) gave up a late inning rally to allow Texas State (4-1) to take a 8-6 win on Friday night.
The Zags gave up four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, allowing the Bobcats to rally and take the win. Gonzaga gave up four walks and a hit batter in the eighth inning alone to allow the rally. GU gave up 11 walks in the game, which tied for tenth most walks allowed by the Zags in a game in the past two decades.
Texas State opened the game with a two-run lead after the first inning, as Texas State leadoff hitter Rashawn Galloway opened the game with a solo home run. The Bobcats then scored a second run as a result of a double that was later brought around to score in the first as well.
Gonzaga got the bats on track in the fourth inning, as back to back hits by Noah Meffert and Mikey Bell opened the inning. An errant throw by Texas State scored Meffert and then put Hudson Shupe on base. Bell and Shupe were then driven in on the first Gonzaga home run of the year, as Ryder Young hit a ball to left center field to give the Zags the lead. His home run appeared to disrupt the Texas State softball game that was happening on the adjoining field, as Young hit the ball past the other side of the dividing wall between the fields. Luca DiPaolo added to the scoring by driving in Andy Cisneros with an RBI double later in the inning.
Texas State took advantage of two walks to score another two runs, cutting the GU advantage to just one run. Both teams got out of matching dififcult situations in the next inning, with neither team able to score a run from situations with two runners on and no outs. Gonzaga then added to the lead in the top of the eighth, thanks to another RBI from DiPaolo. DiPaolo finished the game with two doubles amid a 3 for 4 day at the plate.
Things unraveled in the bottom of the eighth after Zach Bowman gave up a walk, a single, and then hit a batter to load the bases before then surrendering a two run double to tie the game. The Zags called Garret Gores in from the bullpen to get out of the bases loaded situation with no outs. Gores gave up two walks that each automatically scored a run for Texas State, although he put up three strikeouts to limit the damage in the inning. Mikey Bell got on base in the ninth via his third hit of the night but was left stranded as the Zags again failed to convert on the chance to win in late innings.
Gonzaga will look to get a game back on Texas State when they play against them again at 12:30 pm tomorrow.
