Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball beaten by #13 Oklahoma in run rule on Friday

NORMAN, Oklahoma- Gonzaga Baseball (2-6) came up short in their first game against ranked opposition this year, falling in a run rule shortened game by a score of 14-4 at #13 Oklahoma (9-1).

Gonzaga gave up 12 total walks on the night, tied for seventh most by GU in a game in the past two decades. The Zags actually out hit Oklahoma on the night, but the Sooners only gave up one walk all game, making free passes the huge deciding factor in the matchup.

The Sooners jumped out to a lead in the first inning, taking advantage of four walks by Finbar O'Brien to score two runs. A single plated another two OU runners before Dayton Tockey then hit a home run to give Oklahoma six runs in one inning to start the game.

The Zags responded with three runs in the top of the third, with Landon White scoring his first run of the year thanks to an RBI from Noah Meffert. Mikey Bell then hit his first home run of the year sending a ball back to the Oklahoma bullpen in deep left center field to add two runs for the Bulldogs.

Gonzaga managed to load the bases with only one out in the fourth inning, but a double play helped Oklahoma settle in to escape the jam. Oklahoma scored another two runs in the bottom of the fifth after taking advantage of two straight walks from O'Brien, who posted a career high in walks during his outing. OU score additional runs in the sixth inning, taking advantage of another three walks to a run before Brendan Brock tacked on a three run home run.

GU got a run back in the eighth thanks to the first RBI of the season for Ricky Sanchez. Sanchez went 3 for 4 on the night. Oklahoma ended the game early thanks to the run rule after plating another two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Gonzaga will look to bounce back against Oklahoma in a rematch on Saturday, with first pitch set for noon pacific time.
