Zags continue winning ways with huge 16-8 win in Pullman

PULLMAN, Wash.- Gonzaga Baseball (24-14) extended Division 1 Baseball's longest active win streak with a 16-8 win over Washington State (21-20) on Thursday.

The Zags won their 11th game behind another massive outing on offense, putting up 20 hits. This was the most hits by Gonzaga in a game since 2021. Every Bulldog starter had a hit, and the top six batters in the lineup all scored at least two runs.

Gonzaga has now tied the recorded program record for a winning streak with today's victory. They also hold the longest active win streak in Division 1 baseball, and there are currently no other teams with a double digit win streak. The Zags picked up their 17th road win of the season, the most of any team in Division 1.

While Washington State actually opened the game in the first inning with the first two runs of the game, Gonzaga responded to take the lead with three doubles. Maddox Haley had a leadoff double, getting brought home on a single by Noah Meffert. Later in the inning, Bo Shinkle had another double to right center field to score both Jacob Wrubleski and Tommy Eisenstat.

WSU scored four runs between the third and fourth innings, taking advantage of a combined six hits in the two frames to take the lead. The majority of the Cougars' hits came in just those two innings. Able to weather the storm, Gonzaga took the lead back by putting up five runs in each of the next two innings.

Ricky Sanchez led off the fifth with a walk, immediately getting driven in for a run when Mikey Bell hit a home run to deep right field. Haley was driven in for another run thanks to astute baserunning on a WSU fielding error, and Wrubleski and Hudson Shupe were driven in on another double, this time from Wrubleski.

GU had six straight batters reach base safely in the sixth inning, extending the lead with a mix of three hit batters, two walks and a single. The Zags were hit by a pitch five times today, which was also the most times a GU batter has been hit in a game since 2021.

Gonzaga scored runs in the next two innings to put the game out of reach, putting up another three runs with six more hits. Gonzaga had five extra base hits today, and had a .465 batting average with 20 hits across 43 at bats. GU worked twelve free passes on seven walks and the five hit batters.

The Zags will look to set the longest win streak in program history when they take on LMU in Spokane on Friday at 6pm.
