Karsten Sweum shines in Gonzaga’s 7-1 win over LMU

SPOKANE, Wash- Gonzaga Baseball (26-14, 14-3 WCC) picked up a 7-1 in against LMU (12-32, 3-14 WCC) at home on Friday behind a superb start from Karsten Sweum.

Karsten Sweum had a perfect game through the first six innings of the game, only giving up his first baserunner to lead off the seventh inning. He finished with ten strikeouts, his second game with double digit strikeouts at home this year.

The sophomore finished with 7.2 innings pitched and gave up just three hits and a single walk on the night. One of those hits came on a fluke line drive that hit him in the leg, although Sweum responded by staying in the game and immediately striking out the next two batters he faced.

The Zags scored what would prove to be the winning run in the first inning, scoring two runs as Mikey Bell scored a run in his eleventh straight game when he was driven in on a single from Maddox Haley. Ryder Young was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Noah Meffert to the give GU the early lead. Gonzaga is undefeated in games when they score in the first inning, putting up a 10-0 record this year when that is the case. The Bulldogs are also 16-2 on the season when they score first.

Gonzaga scored another two runs in the second, as Landon White and Tommy Eisenstat each scored after opening the inning with back to back doubles. Sweum continued to keep LMU off the basepaths in the top of each inning after being given the extra lead. Sweum ended three innings on a strikeout. The Zags added two more insurance runs in the fifth inning, scoring on back to back doubles from Bell and Young. LMU scored their lone run in the seventh inning. Erik Hoffberg was great in relief of Sweum, tossing for the final four outs while striking out two batters and giving up no hits.

Gonzaga has now struck out the Lions 30 times across the first two games of the series. Today's win secures the seventh straight weekend series win for Gonzaga. They will look to secure their third straight weekend series sweep when they take on LMU on Sunday at noon.
