SPOKANE, Wash.- Gonzaga Baseball (27-14, 15-3) picked up their fourteenth straight victory thanks to fourteen runs, sweeping LMU (12-33, 3-15) with a 14-8 win.
The Zags had five multi-run innings today, including three innings with three runs. GU scored a run in each of their final three innings of batting.
Ryder Young had four runs and three RBIs today, going three for four at the plate and hitting a three run homer in the fourth inning. Young set a new career high in runs scored and tied the season high for the Zags.
Gonzaga opened the game with a three run inning in the bottom of the first, with Maddox Haley hitting a ground rule double that bounced over the centerfield wall to score Mikey Bell. Hudson Shupe scored another two runs when he drove in Young and Haley with a single later in the inning. Gonzaga remains a perfect 11-0 in games in which they score in the first inning, and have a 17-2 record in games in which they score the first run.
LMU responded with three runs in the top of the second, scoring three runs and taking advance of a balk and a wild pitch to tie the game. Finbar O'Brien worked out of a jam with runners on second and third base to keep the game tied. The GU bats backed him up with another run in the third as Young scored again after opening the inning with a leadoff double.
GU then added three more runs in the next frame as Young ripped the 399 foot home run to left centerfield to expand the Bulldog lead. LMU scored a solo home run in the top of the fifth to cut into the deficit.
The Zags added three runs in the sixth, with Meffert picking up another double and Hudson Shupe getting on base with a hit by pitch. Meffert and Shupe then advanced with a double steal and came home on an RBI by Landon White, who was later himself driven in by Jacob Wrubleski. Maddox Haley had his tenth home run of the season in the seventh inning, hitting a matching 399 foot home run to left center field to score two more runs. GU added another two runs in the eighth after two straight walks were driven in on a double by Rece Schuerman. Five different Zags had a double today.
Gonzaga has now swept three straight weekend series and won each of their last seven series. The Zags will take their win streak on the road to Eugene when they take on a huge midweek matchup with #19 Oregon on Tuesday at 2pm.
